Free Flash Websites & Stuff...
Because of the tight economic situation, everyone expects you to work for free these days, or nearly free. The market is flooded with students and people designing their own websites. There are even people offering free stuff for your website, ain't that nice! Hey, why not take it one step further? I'll do you a website with flash animation and a banner campaign for free! Just kidding...
But if you're a programmer looking for advanced source files, then check out Levitated.
If you're looking to buy (or sell) good, cheap, custom flash, then sign up to Flashden, now called Activeden - banner on the left.
Free Greeting cards and E Cards
I always find that it's a pain in ass to find decent free greeting cards or animated e cards. Usually I'd google and then find a greeting card site which does offer free greetings and e cards, but the problem with these sites is that you have to either sign up or give them your email address, inevitably leading to unwanted email newsletters from the e greetings website and of course ultimately more spam. It seemed to me that the best way to send a free animated greeting card would be as a Youtube video - no sign ups, no spam, no fuss. And of course the ability to just post the e card greeting on your friend's wall in facebook.
Animation Effects
Some of the best animations are made with flash, one of my favorites is "Animator Versus Animation" - very clever, whoever animated this. In fact it was so succesful that they've even brought out "Animator Versus Animation 2". Youtube is a great place to test out your newly created animations where you can get instant feedback on your stuff. I had a go at making dirty adult flash animations when I first started learning, but it just didn't turn me on. Maybe I should give it another go.
Websites
Google can now read text inside flash websites, hooray! I know this because I googled some keywords for one of my client's websites who makes handcraftedJewish Wedding Gifts & Modern Hanukkah Menorah and Mezuzah and the description was exactly the same as the text in the file. Phew! It's good news for me because it means that it won't go obselete again, like in the days of dial-up connections when you'd sit for 5 minutes watching a loading animation upon entering a web site.
Banners
I've worked on a few flash banner campaigns in my time, and made banner headings for client's websites. It used to be simple, and you'd put the actionscript code that the host provided you with on the button. But if you're a newbie, don't be fooled into thinking it's going to be easy - many banners these days also contain sound, but the sound has to mute when you roll-off the banner, and here's where i discovered that a thorough knowledge of actionscript is sometimes required.
Exporting To Video
Exporting your animation to avi video is quite simple, as long as you don't need the output video file to be full quality. Exporting for television however is a totally different story, since you do need to export at full resolution. Maybe now that Adobe have taken flash over from Macromedia they will come up with a better solution for exporting flash to video than just being able to export about 500 frames at a time!
Games
Here is a good place to buy cheap flash games. Again, you have to be an absolute whizz at actionscript in order to make a decent game, but as I said before there are loads of websites offering free games for your website. You would probably get quite bored playing most of them, but there are a few gems out there, like Samorost. You HAVE to play Samorost. It's the best flash game ever! But if you want to buy cheap flash games click here.
Fla Source Files
I started learning on Macromedia Flash 3! I discovered it while working on a website for the IOC, they'd made an amazing flash intro. At that time you could download loads of fla source files and tutorials for free, just about anything! Games, intros, special flash, drag 'n' drop... Soon enough though, people decided they didn't want to just give away their secrets, so they started charging for them. If I wanted to have advanced games on my websites I needed to learn actionscript, or bribe a friend who does know actionscript, like the guy who made this really cool Thumbnail Grid Componenet for Flex with Soft Magnifying Effect. There are a few free fla source files on this site, I hope newbies will find them useful.
